Temperatures are expected to reach over 100 degrees this weekend and even up to 107 in the early week! To prepare yourself, check out our blog on heat safety in Fresno. In addition to following those heat safety tips, we’d like to offer an additional alternative to braving the heat – stay inside. 100 plus temperatures can be extremely hard on your body and dangerous for children, the elderly and anyone already weak from sickness. To keep you occupied on these extremely hot days, here’s a few of our favorite activities to take part in within the safe and air conditioned confines of your home.

For Kids

A great activity to keep kids entertained is making and playing with their own Play-Doh. Before the weekend, pick up the ingredients and your kids are sure to have a blast keeping cool.

Homemade Play-Doh Recipe

  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 tablespoons Vegetable Oil
  • 1/2 cup Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Cream of Tartar
  • Food Coloring
  • Up to 1.5 cups boiling water (adjust for desired consistency)

Mix the flour, salt, vegetable oil and cream of tartar in a bowl. In a separate bowl, mix the water and food coloring together. Slowly add the colored water to the flour mixture, stirring until it is a sticky dough. After it has cooled, take it out and let the kids burn off some energy by thoroughly kneading the dough until it reaches the desired consistency. If you need to, add a small amount of flour to cut any remaining stickiness.

For Adults

Branch away from your go-to board games and try something new. If you haven’t played Risk or Settlers of Catan, grab a few competitive friends and test your strategic skills. Interactive trivia games are another great way to keep everyone involved without lots of downtime. How well do you know Seinfeld, Friends or Harry Potter? Scene It is a DVD trivia game that focuses on specific television shows and movies.

Stay in, out

If you’ve seen all of the summer blockbusters out right now, why not visit a local museum? Kids always enjoy the Discovery Center at the Museum of Natural Science and History. For something more active, the whole family and chill out on the rink at the Gateway Ice Center.
